Amatola Water Board at Albany Coast Reverse Osmosis Plant in Ndlambe Local Municipality

AMATOLA WATER BOARD EXECUTIVES MET WITH NDLAMBE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY TO SOLVE WATER PRODUCTION IN ALBANY COAST

On the 03 May 2022, Amatola Water led by the Acting Chief Executive met with Ndlambe Local Municipality, Ekuphumleni Development forum and ratepayers to put an end to the daunting matter of water supply in Ward 3 and Ward 4.  These two wards get water from the reverse osmosis plant that is situated in Albany Coast.

There has been a litany of challenges that has challenged the water supply and Amatola Water together with Department of Water and Sanitation have vowed to prioritise the solution to the plight for the benefit of the communities who get water from this plant.

The following were the challenges tormenting this plant and giving sleepless nights to Amatola Water:

  • RO 1 Pump broken down and that is sourced abroad and will be delivered in 10 weeks.
  • Fine sand which result to the blocking of the filters.
  • Replacement of membranes that is required at RO12
  • Trains that are working 24 hours which bring a strain to the plant.
  • The sand in the raw water tank
  • Vandalism – consistent cable theft in the Amatola Water boreholes that are in Diaz Cross.

The following solutions were identified to assist and put the end to the challenges in the plant.

  • Checking an alternative supplier that can deliver in less than 10weeks.
  • Trying to get a customised pump with a short turn around.
  • Pre -filtration before the actual process.
  • Give the trains time to cool off so that they do not break now and again.
  • Accelerate the long term solution that should be implemented soon.
  • Short term solution is replacement of membranes and RO 1 pump
  • The sand in the raw water tank has been partially solved and the removal of the sand in the tank has also brought challenges in the water production as the sand put the strain in the water production. This process has also brought additional breakages in the plant.

The reservoir levels remain depleted and there is less water due to the challenges that are in the plant.  There is no enough water supply for all the communities in ward 3 and ward 4 hence there is a task team that is looking at the matter of bringing water to all those we service.

Amatola Water appreciates the patience of the communities on the restrictions that has been implemented in order to maintain water supply.  This has resulted to most people not getting water at the stipulated time by the notices.
