Amatola Water has successfully completed the Kirkwood Water Supply Scheme, a critical project designed to enhance water storage capacity for the town of Kirkwood and its neighbouring settlements. This initiative ensures up to six days of raw and potable bulk water storage, alleviating shortages during maintenance on the water canal transporting raw water through the area.
Located within the Sunday's River Valley Local Municipality Municipality, the project involved constructing a new raw water storage lay dam with a capacity of 14 million litres, along with a 3.0 million litre reservoir at Kirkwood Town. The reservoir serves Kirkwood, Aqua Park, and Bergsig, while another 3.0 million litre reservoir at Bontrug supplies Moses Mabhida and Msengeni. Associated pipework was also included in the scope.
The project officially reached practical completion on 5 December 2024, with physical progress standing at 99%. Key components, including the Moses Mabhida and Kirkwood Town reservoirs, are now 100% complete, while the raw water storage dam is 99% finalised. The Kirkwood Water Supply Scheme is set to provide long-term benefits, ensuring reliable water access and supporting the region’s growth.
With the recent completion of other critical projects such as the James Kleynhans WTW Phase 2 project in Makhanda, the three 3 Pipe Bridges Pipeline Refurbishment near Mpekweni, and the Misgund Water Supply Scheme Project in Koukamma LM, Amatola Water continues to demonstrate its commitment to delivering uninterrupted water services to improve the well-being of the communities of the Eastern Cape.
