Amatola Water Joins the Eastern Cape in Celebrating S.E.K. Mqhayi’s 150-Year Legacy

Amatola Water is honoured to take part in a significant celebration as the Eastern Cape commemorates 150 years since the birth of S.E.K. Mqhayi a literary pioneer, cultural icon, and proud son of the province.

Held at Walter Sisulu University in Ntabozuko (formerly Berlin), the event marks the official launch of the 2025 Heritage Day celebrations. It was attended by Acting Premier MEC Mvoko and the Eastern Cape Provincial Government leadership.

Known as the “father of isiXhosa poetry,” Mqhayi’s enduring contributions to African literature and cultural identity remain a source of inspiration for generations. His legacy continues to strengthen indigenous knowledge, cultural pride, and national memory.

The day featured powerful cultural performances, heartfelt tributes, and the unveiling of a legacy project in Mqhayi’s honour. A moving wreath-laying ceremony led by Acting Premier MEC Mvoko paid tribute to Mqhayi’s role in elevating isiXhosa as a language of strength and resistance.

As we join in this celebration, Amatola Water recognises the vital connection between heritage, culture, and natural resources. We remain committed to preserving both for the benefit of future generations.

Together, we honour the past, celebrate the present, and look ahead to a future built on identity, unity, and progress.
