Exploring the Future of Ludeke Dam: A Visit from Amatola Water Board Team

Yesterday, a team from Amatola Water Board, led by Mr. Johnathan Jackson, visited the Ludeke Dam to assess the possibility of taking over water management responsibilities from Umngeni Water. With Umngeni's contract set to expire at the end of October 2025, this visit marks an important step in ensuring a smooth transition for the community.

The Ludeke Dam, located 16km northwest of Bizana, plays a critical role in supplying water to the Nomlacu Water Treatment Works. Completed in 2014, this dam holds 14.9 million cubic meters of water, with a reliable yield of 5.15 million cubic meters per year, making it a vital resource for the area.

During the visit, the team met with representatives from the Department of Water and Sanitation and the Umngeni-Uthukela Water Board, who provided valuable insights into various aspects of the dam's functionality and operations.

The team inspected the dam, which is currently full at 100%! They discussed potential profitability, risks, and challenges associated with managing the dam.

Amatola Water's involvement with Ludeke Dam is viewed as a significant step and a watershed moment in line with its vision of providing bulk water services throughout the province. Dr. Gaster Sharpley, Chairperson of the Board, highlighted this during a recent board meeting, emphasizing how it will expand the scope of Amatola Water Board. A final decision regarding the takeover of Ludeke Dam will be made following the completion of the assessment report presented to the leadership.

As Amatola Water Board prepares for the potential takeover, they are committed to keeping the community informed and engaged. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting journey toward ensuring a reliable water supply for that region!
