“HITTING THE GROUND RUNNING” INDUCTION OF NEW INTERIM BOARD MEMBERS STARTS WITH NAHOON DAM TOUR

As part of the induction of the newly appointed interim board members, Amatola Water’s interim Board visited the Nahoon Dam facilities to gain firsthand insight into the operations critical to delivering safe and clean water to its clients. The tour included visits to the water treatment works, laboratory, and the dam . The Interim Board, accompanied by executives, took this opportunity to deepen their understanding of the critical process and infrastructure that underpins the organisation’s operations.

Following the site visits, the induction continued at the Amatola Water head office, where the Interim Board was briefed on several vital aspects of the organisation’s functions. Dr. S. Fikeni, Chairperson of the Public Service Commission Critical was invited to the induction where he gave insights on improving professionalism in board operations which would assist the board in reinforcing the importance of governance and conduct.

Mr. J. Jackson, Acting Chief Executive of Amatola Water, provided an overview of the organisation’s strategic direction, including its vision, mission, values, and key performance metrics and a financial overview detailing highlights from the Annual Financial Statements and the financial performance indicators. The session also included an organisational structure breakdown, outlining leadership and key roles within the organisation.

Another critical part of the induction involved a review of the Strategic Risk Register for 2024/25, and an overview of the Audit & Risk Committee's Terms of Reference for the same period. Mr. G. Labane, the outgoing Chairperson of the Audit & Risk Committee, provided insights into the strategic priorities and key expectations for the committee. Ms. P. Makhanya, the Department of Water and Sanitation’s Provincial Head was also invited where she concluded the session with valuable perspectives on the expectations of key shareholders.

In his introductory message to Amatola Water staff, the Chairperson of the Interim Board, Dr. Gaster Sharpley emphasised the Board’s focus on governance while management handles the day-to-day operations. He highlighted key priorities for the future, including strengthening relationships with clients, improving infrastructure, boosting revenue collection, and expanding the organisation's reach. The Chairperson also stressed the importance of improving the public perception and improving efficiency and service delivery. He encouraged the staff to help in elevating Amatola Water to its rightful position as a leading provincial water board.
